Really Close

We are leaving in just two days. We are going to be in Dallas for two days before we go on to Kiev. But, I am ready to go. I need to put the last minute things in the suitcases and then we are ready. I will take a picture of the suitcases today. I am sure I am over packing. Oh well.

Our wonderful church (Church of Grace) had prayer for us yesterday. What a great place to worship. Our church members are all so supportive and such wonderful God loving people. We were given some donations yesterday at church and we are very grateful to these people. We will use this money to give to the orphanage. Wow, God really is awesome.

Couple of questions. Does Windows Live Messenger work from there? Does anyone know? How is the humidity level there?

God bless all.

The humidity is a bear! Espsecially right before and after a storm, it can be near 100%. The weather is hopefully starting to cool off a little now, but most days it was HOT last year...except when it rained - then it was rather chilly. Especially the day or so before a storm, it would get really warm and muggy with absolutely zero breeze or A/C. It was torture! The humidity made it feel a lot hotter or colder than it really is. You will also likely be in Ukraine long enough for the weather to start really cooling off and transitioning into fall. Should be a great time of year to be there!

We didn't use Messenger, so not sure about that. If you haven't already done so, be sure to download Skype and have family and friends do the same. It's a great way to talk via the internet. We would call our parents at home or on their cell phones from Skype for an unbelievably cheap rate. Or if it happened to be when they were also at a computer, we could talk for free!!!

Word of advice... when you go to pack your last minute items, re-evaluate one last time. Take out a few items, and then a few more. You'll be carrying your luggage around a good bit, including up & down stairs sometimes, and oftentimes there's not a ton of space in the vehicles you're in. And it is perfectly fine to wear the same things over (that's what the locals do) - just pack versatile items. We packed pretty light, yet if I was doing it over I would've taken quite a few things out.

Be glad you're going in the warm weather - trying to pack winter clothes for a month-long trip is REALLY tough!

Good luck!

Windows Messenger works as long as you have internet access. One of the best items we purchased in Ukraine was a wireless internet card that goes in the USB port. We purchased one from MTC as others weren't compatible with Vista. It was around $175 and works throughout all of Ukraine.

The humidity level hasn't been too bad in the last three weeks. It can get pretty hot though, but it's been rather pleasant. Yesterday it was over 85 degrees, but only about 76 today.

Email me if you have any other questions that I might be able to answer stacianddamon@gmail.com

Great to hear about your church members, we found neighborhood friends and church members to be a great support while we were in Ukraine.

I hope and pray you have an Internet connection! We were so far out in the middle of nowhere that we did not have a connection most of the time.

As far as Windows Live Messenger, I don't know for sure. I do remember blogger coming up in Ukrainian when I connected to the Internet in Kiev.

Also a word of WARNING: Make SURE you have really good antivirus/ antispam/ anti-everything on any computer that you take! Computer virusus are VERY rampant in Ukraine. My laptop got taken down by one in Kiev, I now use BitDefender because of that experience.

Also when I went to an Internet cafe in Kiev and sent a simple email home to tell of our flight schedule home my mother-in-law reported that that simple email had 65 attached viruses, as detected by her MacAfee software.

We took a camera card to a photo place to have the pictures copied to CD. Months later I inserted the camera (SD memory) card into my laptop and it detected a worm on the camera card!

Finally, remember when taking pictures and keeping your journal to backup, backup, backup. I never deleted a digital photo that I did not have in at least two other locations (CD/ Hard Drive, etc.)

It is really here! Best of luck to you. We will be thinking and praying for you. I sure hope we get to meet you while we are there :-) Everybody has told me - take out half of what you think you need and you will still have overpacked!
