Question Please

I would like to know how long it takes you to get your proof of Citizenship on the children. We need this as you know to get their Social Security Cards. We can't go to the doctor until we can get some Social Security Cards. I am sure you all know all of this information, but I wondered how long it was taking right now to get the proof of Citizenship. Thanks for the help bloggers.

Ours took longer than normal, I finally had to call & it apparently had gotten lost in the mail and had to be re-issued. I think normal is something like 45 days, but have heard of people getting it pretty quickly lately.

We did not have to wait on a SSN to go to the pediatrician. But they'll actually issue a temporary non-citizen number until you can prove citizenship. Then they'll update the children's status. We did that in the interim. Take the court decree & new birth certificates (and translations).

It took about a month and a half to get the COC.
We also didn't wait for the SSN to go to the doctor. I just didn't put anything on that line. In fact, I don't ever put it on the forms. (Trying to protect their identities.) I hate to admit it, but I still haven't gotten Maddie's SSN yet. We're still waiting on her Kansas birth certificate...then that will be the next item off the list - and we've been home almost 8 months! :)

It seems like ours came fairly quickly (30 to 60 days?) I remember well the day that it came in the mail. I opened the document and cried. Yes, it was a form letter from the President of the United States but it really hit home to my patriotism and all that we are blessed with in this country. To know that my boys were citizens and have every right of anyone born in this country. What a blessing!

As far as insurance, check with your employer if you have group employer type of insurance. You SHOULD be able to add your new kids retroactive to the day they legally became yours in Ukraine. Most company insurance plans require that you make these "life changes" within 30 or 90 days of the adoption.

I remember going to get SSN #'s for the boys. I just took our big folder of adoption paperwork. I filled out the form at the social security office and temporarily stumped the worker (I was one of those "unusual" cases) but he figured it out and took copies of the court documents (certified English translations) and such and a few weeks later we got the boy's cards.

One final note on insurance-- good luck with the appeals process. Get to know what it is with your insurance company, you'll likely need it somewhere along the way.

We took our boys in for a "wellness" checkup and it was billed like a "scout camp physical" and the insurance refused to pay for it.

We also started all over again on immunizations, due to lack of standards and records of Ukrainian immunizations. The insurance refused to pay for immunizations of a child over 4 or 5 years old, so we had a huge hassle (and still do) over shots for our older son.

Good luck!

Ours took about a month (4-5 weeks) to arrive, with SS cards following shortly thereafter. We didn't have to wait for a SSN to go the doc, either. Your adoption certificates, birth certificates, and/or court decree should be enough. You don't even need the SSN to register for school. The only thing you "should" need a temporary # for is taxes - but you should have the kids SSNs by then.

Tammy our route was different being military; but we didn't have to provide a ssn number for Ella. I remember checking a box on some papers at the Consulate (I think) stating we wanted SSN cards. When I arrived in Denver with Ella, the customs official said her papers should arrive in 2-4 weeks...but it is a government entity so I anticipate more like 4-6 weeks.
