Thanks so much for the comments on the COC. The problem we have is the insurance won't cover them until we have a SS#. The oldest needs some immediate surgery on his tonsils and we don't want to embark on that without some insurance. They will only retroactive for 30 days. So if the COC takes longer than 30 days we would be out of pocket all the money. This is so frustrating. There should be some way to get past this with United Healthcare. I think we are going to try to get something done with them. Thanks for all the help. I knew you guys would have the answers.

We are doing great. Things are settling in. All the kids are behaving much better and seem to really enjoy being home. They are all playing so well together. We will try to post some pictures by tomorrow.

Love to all

Congratulations! I am new to your blog but saw your post about insurance. I highly doubt they can do this. According the Health Insurance Portablility Act (HIPAA) group insurers must cover adopted children from the date of the adoption. Please email me at tskeechbaer@comcast.net and I will get you the correct citation and law to give to United Healthcare! Insurance companies truly frustrate me! Best wishes on many many years of joy with your children.

Can you try getting the "temporary" number that I mentioned? Our son's number didn't change once we went back with the COC, they just changed his status in the computer.

We had United Healthcare when we first came home, and had no problems taking him in for services without the SSN. I would suggest contacting your HR rep and seeing if they can do anything to help.

Try going through the covering employer's HR department. It doesn't sound right that they won't cover you without a SSN. Unless their is a specific clause in the company's contract otherwise, they are supposed to cover it just like a newborn joining your family. They should be retroactive to the day your adoption was finalized...not the day you came home or came through immigration, but the day that your court decree was finalized. Again, check with your HR department and see what pull they can give you.

You can apply for the children's ss numbers without the COC. We did several times with our many adopted children. When we adopted we came home close to tax time and you need ss numbers for that. They just will be listed as resident aliens until the COC's come .. usually around 45 days. Then you take that back to your ss office and they will change their status to US citizen. Congratulations on your children.
